Welcome to Gosforth Dolphins
Gosforth Swimming Pool currently hosts one of 4 Dolphins squads which form the intitial stage of the City of Newcastle Swimming Development Scheme. The other 4 Dolphins squads are East End Dolphins, Elswick Dolphins and Jesond Dolphins.
The basic entry standard for Gosforth Dolphins is the ability to swim competently, preferably in all of the four strokes, butterfly - backstroke - breaststroke and front crawl/freestyle. There is no automatic age barr to joining Dolphins, however the Dolphin squads have traditionally catered for the age group betwwen 5yrs and 12yrs. That said, a number of 'late' starters to the sport have gone on to achieve No 1 in Great Britain and medalled in National Championships.
Gosforth Dolphins have also had swimmers go on to represent GB at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games. Including many International championships and events.
So any one who has potential and committment with a will to learn and apply themselves, there is an opportunity for you!
The aims of the Dolphin Squads are to improve basic stroke techniques, starting and turning skills as well as other competitive skills, leading to ASA NPTS stroke awards and competative start awards.
That natural progression from Dolphins Squads is that of Super Dolphins. There is one such squad in the City, it is sited in the West of the City hosted at Gosforth Pool, coached by Dave Hewitt.
Sounds interesting? Just what you've been looking for? Then pop along to one of our training sessions and see if it's for you. Check our training times and news flashes (for last minute pool closures) and give it a go.
All you need to get started is a swimming costume (boys-NO baggy trendy shorts) (girls-NO bikinis), swim goggles, swim hat and a drinks bottle (NO fizzy drinks) filled with water with a personal flavour if needed.
In our continuing prolonged period of dilly dallying over how to progress the current Dolphin system, the Council are committed to providing a version of Time Trials held around the 4 pools in the City plus the ability of utilising City Pool too, Plus the inclusion of a watered down version of the most successfull and highly competetive and entertaining Galas, in which the swimmer gains valuable experience of swimming in a cempetetive environment, planning for the future!!!!
